Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Wednesday announced the name of its 5G service. The state owned telecommunications provider made the announcement via its social media handle. BSNL has also announced a SIM-less operation service Q-5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) in select circles. However, the service has not been commercially rolled our and is currently in a soft launch phase. There is no word on the public rollouts as the telco is actively conducting 5G trials in various cities.
What is BSNL Q-5G Service?
The government-run telecom company has rebranded its 5G services as Quantum 5G following suggestions from its users.
BSNL’s Quantum 5G FWA is an internet lease line aimed at businesses and enterprises. It will enable high speed data without voice using home grown technology. The plans for the Quantum 5G FWA will start at Rs. 999 per month.
The announcement comes a week after the company invited public input for naming its 5G service. Further, BSNL is expected to improve its 4G service with the deployment of one lakh additional towers.
The high-speed internet service by BSNL is currently being piloted for enterprise users in Hyderabad. It is expected to expand to select cities, including Bengaluru, Pune, Chandigarh, Visakhapatnam, Pondicherry, and Gwalior.
BSNL 5G Pricing, Compatability and Coverage Zones
The government is presenting BSNL Q-5G as India’s very own next-gen telecom network, developed completely with local expertise. The project is being built from scratch in collaboration with top Indian tech players like TCS, Tejas Networks, C-DOT, and ITI. What’s interesting is that no foreign companies are involved in the development, making it a fully homegrown effort.
BSNL has also been given high-quality 5G spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3.3 GHz bands. The company plans to use its current and future 4G towers—since they’re already 5G-ready—for the big rollout. Out of the planned 1,00,000 towers across the country, over half are already up and running. So, once BSNL switches on its 5G services, it’s expected to reach a wide audience fairly quickly.
This marks a big step in the push for indigenous, next‑generation connectivity. The names symbolizes the “power, speed, and future” BSNL made the announcement by sharing a post on X (formerly Twitter) on June 18,2025.
How can BSNL 5G Service Challenge Jio and Airtel
BSNL’s Q-5G Fixed Wireless Access Packages are a cost-effective alternative to traditional leased line connections. The service operates on 700 MHz and 3.3 GHz spectrum brand using fully indigenous technology stacks.
While the FWA rollouts are B2B focused, a public rollout under the Q‑5G umbrella is expected soon. Additional details on pricing, handset compatibility and coverage zones is expected to be announced within a few weeks.
