Season 1 (2005): Abhijeet Sawant, the Original Indian Idol
The road to the trophy. Abhijeet was 23 and from Mumbai. The season gave India its first reality-TV stars, among them Amit Sana, Rahul Vaidya and Prajakta Shukre. Abhijeet beat Amit Sana in the final, and the two were reunited on the Idol stage in July 2026 for the show’s 75th-episode special. This is the least documented journey on the list, since audition details from 2004 are scarce, so I haven’t invented any.
The win, and the argument that followed. The result came down to audience voting. Years later, Amit Sana claimed the channel blocked his voting lines to help Abhijeet win. Abhijeet replied that an international team monitored the show and that one finalist couldn’t get votes while the other didn’t. Neither claim has been independently settled, so it’s best left as a disagreement between the two finalists.
After the show. His debut album Aapka Abhijeet Sawant came out in 2005 and gave him the hit “Mohabbatein Lutaunga”. A second album, Junoon, followed in 2007. He later built a Marathi career, with “Sar Sukhachi Shravani” (2013) as a breakthrough and film songs like “Beating Beating” and “Ye Na”. Reality TV stayed part of his life. He was first runner-up on Jo Jeeta Wohi Super Star, finished third at Asian Idol and appeared on Nach Baliye. In 2024 he finished as runner-up on Bigg Boss Marathi Season 5, then returned to music with a single, “Chal Turu Turu”.
Season 2 (2006): Sandeep Acharya, the “Black Horse” Who Beat the Favourite
The road to the trophy. Sandeep was 21 and from Bikaner. He first got noticed for his smile and an Udit Narayan-like style of singing, and he was known for regular riyaaz. N. C. Karunya from Hyderabad was widely seen as the stronger technical singer. Judge Farah Khan said before the finale that Karunya was technically unbeatable, though she had also warmed to Sandeep.
The win. The finale was on 22 April 2006, with Kajol as a special judge. The two finalists sang “Subhan Allah” from Fanaa, coached by Jatin-Lalit. Sandeep was called the black horse, and the judges were stunned when the audience poll went his way. He took home a ₹1 crore contract and a car. Karunya didn’t lose out for long. He went on to record for more than 200 projects, mostly in Telugu.
After the show. Sandeep’s debut album was Mere Saath Saara Jahaan. He competed on Jalwa Four 2 Ka 1 in Mika Singh’s team and appeared as himself in the TV drama Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai. A second album, O Sanam Tere Bina, was due around the time he died in December 2013. Farah Khan remembered him as a gentle boy who left too soon.
Season 3 (2007): Prashant Tamang, the Constable Whose Win Became a Movement
The road to the trophy. Prashant was born in Darjeeling. After his father died, he left school and joined the Kolkata Police in his father’s place, singing in the police orchestra. He auditioned in Kolkata after friends and senior officers urged him to.
The win. The finale was a showdown against Amit Paul of Shillong, a favourite in Delhi and the metros. Prashant won by audience vote, with an estimated 70 million SMS votes cast. Reports say he received about ten times the votes Amit got. The Gorkha community in India and Nepal treated voting for him almost like a campaign. His singing was described as simple and earnest rather than technically flashy. His prize was ₹1 crore and a Maruti SX4, and fireworks lit up Darjeeling that night.
After the show. His debut album Dhanyavad mixed Hindi and Nepali songs. He starred in Nepali films, including Gorkha Paltan (2010), Angalo Yo Maya Ko and Nishani (2014). He died of cardiac arrest on 11 January 2026, aged 43, leaving behind his wife, Geeta Thapa, and their daughter.
Season 4 (2009): Sourabhee Debbarma, the First Woman to Win
The road to the trophy. Sourabhee was studying in Pune when her father registered her for the show. Her audition was in Kolkata, where she reached the venue at 7 AM and felt the trophy was far away. She had no formal music training, and both her parents were government employees.
The win. The season had a historic top three, with two women, Sourabhee and Torsha Sarkar, alongside Kapil Thapa. Before the finale she described herself as a stage rocker and a good performer. The result was decided by public vote on 1 March 2009. She won a ₹1 crore contract with Sony and a Tata SUV, and said she couldn’t believe it.

He acted in Sri Jagadguru Aadi Sankara (2013) and Prema Geema Jantha Nai and joined Bigg Boss Telugu 5 in 2021. He has also hosted Telugu Indian Idol. Online he’s among the most visible winners, with about 755,000 Instagram followers and 68,000 YouTube subscribers as of July 2026.
Season 6 (2012): Vipul Mehta, Amritsar’s Consistent Performer
The road to the trophy. Vipul was 21, a classically trained singer from Amritsar, and he trained under Ustad Maqbool Husain Khan. He competed against two other Punjabi finalists, Devender Pal Singh and Amit Kumar.

What the 16 wins have in common
The paths differ, but a few patterns repeat:
- Winning isn’t only about the best voice. Sandeep Acharya beat a technically stronger favourite, and Ananya Nanda beat the finalist many expected to win.
- A strong home base matters. Prashant Tamang’s community voted like it was a campaign, and Rishi Singh and Sunny Hindustani had huge public sympathy.
- Consistency beats one big night. Sreerama Chandra, Vipul Mehta and Vaibhav Gupta were praised for steady performances through the season.
- Stories help, and some people question them. Rishi’s adoption reveal and Sunny’s shoeshiner background moved viewers, though some doubted the first.
- Not every season ends cleanly. From Amit Sana’s allegation to Sunny’s debated win, results have been argued about for years.
